Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow + Parts of the Day

Time Expressions

  • Yesterday was Thursday.
  • Today is Friday.
  • Tomorrow is Saturday.

In general, we add the part of the day (morning, afternoon, evening) after Yesterday / Today / Tomorrow:

Yesterday + Part of the day
Today + Part of the day
Tomorrow + Part of the day

EXCEPTION: When we talk about the night. (See these exceptions below)

YESTERDAY

  • Yesterday morning
  • Yesterday afternoon
  • Yesterday evening
  • Last night

Be careful: You do NOT say “Yesterday night” ❌ … You say LAST NIGHT ✅

TODAY

When talking about parts of TODAY, we use THIS before the part of the day, EXCEPT for night.

  • This morning
  • This afternoon
  • This evening
  • Tonight

Be careful: You do NOT say “This night” ❌ … You say TONIGHT ✅

TOMORROW

  • Tomorrow morning
  • Tomorrow afternoon
  • Tomorrow evening
  • Tomorrow night

Yes, we just say “Tomorrow night” when talk about that part of the day.

  • What did you do last night?
  • What are you going to do tonight?
  • What are your plans for tomorrow night?
  • Did you have breakfast this morning?
  • I had a meeting yesterday afternoon?
  • I have an appointment for tomorrow morning?
